How did the events of WWII help facilitate the onset of the Cold War and Influence american foreign policy throughout the 20th century?
The main events that set the course for the Cold War preceded World War II. After Hitler came to power in Germany he started asserting his authority by expanding German territory. First he renounced the Versailles Treaty. The allies did nothing. Then he marched into the Rhineland. Again, no response from the allies. So next he annexed Austria. Still the allies sat around and let him get away with it. So he demanded that he be allowed to annex the Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia. The leaders of the democracies went and negotiated a treat that allowed him to do it if he promised this would be the last of the German aggressions. Hitler promised, and Chamberlain proclaimed this meant “peace in out times.” Six months later Hitler seized the rest of Czechoslovakia and the allies ignored it. Then Hitler started threatening Poland. Finally becoming alarmed the allies guaranteed Poland’s security, and threatened Hitler with war if he invaded. At this point Hitler didn’t believe the democracies would do anything to stop him, and he invaded Poland on September 1, 1939.
In the wake of WW II this was recent history, and fresh in the minds of all the diplomats in the West. If they had just stood up to Hitler to begin with World War II might have been avoided. Now the West was faced with an aggressive Joseph Stalin. They were not going to make the same mistake they had made with Hitler. Truman left the US Army in place instead of packing it up and bringing it home like we had in WW I. He was unwilling to invaded Soviet occupied territory to liberate the countries the USSR was occupying in the wake of WW II, but he developed a policy, known as the Truman Doctrine, that stated the United States would oppose anything they considered Soviet aggression in the future. This policy became known as “containment.” And was the official policy of the United States for the rest of the Cold War. Hitler’s aggression was the bias for what developed into the Cold War.
