Why did Civil War-era military personnel put their right hands into their coat vests near the chest?
I notice in photographs, especially when with President Lincoln, military chiefs placed their right hands into their military coats, in the chest area, by unbuttoning three of the jacket buttons. Why?
I always thought they were just copying Napoleon. I think I read that he had palsy or some other ailment in that hand, so he kept it tucked in his coat like that to keep people from noticing.
