How close was Germany in WWII in creating an Atomic bomb?
I've read rumors of Germany being so close in the Atomic Bomb's creation. The United State's Manhattan project was only a response to this attempt.
Something happened to the Bomb's development that lead it to be scrapped.
So many rumors surround this statement. Such as the British SAS sabotagingg the plans for its development or it was an unorganized lot who developed were developing the bomb, but failed...
Can anyone enlighten me on what exactly happen?
Nazi Germany never really had a BOMB program... the HAD been the first to determine the possibility of nuclear fission, and the German nuclear ENERGYproject in Nazi Germany, informally known as the Uranverein (Uranium Club), began in April 1939, just months after the discovery of nuclear fission in January 1939. The first effort ended in months, but the second effort began under the auspices of the German Army Ordnance Office on the day World War II began, 1 September 1939.
The KEY here is any nation that can successfully create a nuclear POWER program CAN create a weapons program... Physicists including Albert Einstien were aware of this and contacted Prime Minister Churchill and President Roosevelt which led to the creation of the Manhattan Project.
ONE thing that truly screwed up the German program was Hitler banning all JEWS from government & college positions... in time this would all but eliminate a generation of physicists in Germany !!
YES, the British and Americans DID work actively to ensure that Germany could NOT get the materials and scientists to complete either project - one KEY operation was led by the British SOE (Special Operations Executive) that ordered the Norwegian heavy water sabotage -- a series of actions undertaken by Norwegian saboteurs during World War II to prevent the German nuclear energy project from acquiring heavy water (deuterium oxide), which could be used to produce nuclear weapons.
