How did the Soviet Union know how to build nuclear bombs?
After the USA created them and used it on Japan the Soviet Union was building them too right off the bat. I was wondering, "How?". I was told it was possibly the KGB supplying intel and secrets on American nuclear bombs.
A naive British physicist called Alan Nunn-May gave the Soviets the know-how, along with processed uranium samples from Canada.
Nunn-May was born in 1911, and proved a talented physicist at King;s College, London. He worked on research during WW11, first on radar, on early aspects of the nuclear bomb, and on nuclear reactors in Canada. Whilst in Canada, he saw a U.S. report which warned that Germany might be capable of exploding a 'dirty bomb' which would infect large sections of the population with radio-acitivity (this report was wrong, as it turned out). Being of left-wing inclinations, he worried that the Soviet Union - our allies at that time - could be devastated by such a German attack.
"It seemed to me that the possible danger to the Russians from the effects of the dirty bomb was even greater than the possible danger to the West," Nunn May states. "So, I took the measure of contacting the Russian Secret Service." He gave them what they needed.
It should be noted that Nunn-May was never a Soviet spy. He genuinely believed he was doing the best thing for the WW11 allies against Germany. He was arrested in 1946 after a Soviet cipher clerk defected in Canada and named him.
Nunn-May died in January 2003.
