Advice on adopting a cat from a kill shelter?
Hi,
I would like to get a young cat (smaller than my 1 and a half year old cat so dominance can be established easily) from a place where it would otherwise be put down. Any advice on doing this the most ethical way possible and what shelter may be reputable in the Dallas Ft Worth area?
Adopting a smaller cat doesn't necessarily mean that your cat would be the dominant. My smallest cat is the dominant in my house, and he's also the next to the youngest in age. Only the cats themselves can work that out. It's impossible for you to be able to predict or decide that. You won't have to worry about who the dominant is until they are older anyway, and with only a couple of cats it shouldn't be an issue at all anyway. It won't even be something that you will really notice. Your best bet for finding kill shelters in the Dallas area is to call animal control....214-670-6848. Ask them for the names of the kill shelters in the area or ask if they have any strays for adoption. Be prepared to take the animal straight to a vet for care before you expose your existing cat to it. Never expose your pets to new pets until they have been cleared by a vet. If you can't find one at a kill shelter, then look on Craigslist or just go to the SPCA of Dallas.
Edit: If you can't find one in the greater DFW area, then you might want to look at the smaller cities like Grand Prarie.
