Why do UK mainland political parties not take part in Northern Ireland elections ?
Why doesn't the Conservatives, Labour and the Lib Dems have bases in Northern Ireland ? If they do have bases, why do they not take part in elections in Northern Ireland. They always seem to have alliances with local political parties that have a sectarian divide, except for the Lib Dems, who are allianced with the Alliance Party.
Because Northern Ireland is a devolved government, much like Scotland, so it controls all of its local affairs from Belfast as opposed to them being dictated by Westminster. Therefore an English party would have very little power in Northern Ireland.
It has its own variety of political parties, some of which have heavy support of, or affilition with, a political party in Westminster. So if a person supports the Lib Dem for example, they should vote for a NI party which supports Lib Dem aims, or even supports them directly - a.k.a the Alliance Party for example.
There are also some branches of Westminster parties in Northern Ireland, such as The Labour Party of Northern Ireland etc.
