Walther P38 WWII era for $695? Should I buy this?
First, keep in mind that I live in California and have learned alot about trying to have handguns FFL'd locally. It's been a huge frustration.
I've been looking for a WWII era pistol and found locally a P38 dated 1945 from the Walther plant (N#zi markings included).
Not the best shape but still looks like a shooter. A little pitting here and there.. about what you'd expect for a 60+ year old gun. It has two mags included.
The ones I've seen on GunsAmerica.com seem to go for either the same price or higher but in a little better shape (plus I'd have to pay $100 for the FFL transfer here)
So my questions are, should I just go ahead and get it? Is there any remedy for repair of pitting? Does the N@zi markings make it collectable?
What are your thoughts?
Keep in mind I don't have Luger or 1911 money. I want a first wwii collectible pistol.

When I mean FFL'd locally, I mean shopping online. It's a huge pain in the @ss. Pistols are especially difficult.
Sure, late-war production weapons may be in what could be considered "poor quality," but in this instance you are purchasing the weapon based mostly on its historical significance. The same is true when buying a Mauser Kar98k.
I have seen P38s listed in that price range, so I doubt that you are spending too much. The FFL is what concerns me about your question, as the fee seems incredibly high.
If you're able to buy the handgun, I would assume you are 21 years old, which also enables you to get a Curios and Relics Federal Firearms License from Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms. The application fee is $35, and enables you to buy weapons that are over a certain age (I'm not sure what it is exactly, but I know WWII weapons qualify). If you're considering collecting more, I would consider that route.
