Question about two Firearms...?
Long time no see, my fellow Answerers. I have a question about two firearms that I've had my eye on for awhile.
The first is a Marlin Model 410 (Or it's sister clone, the Winchester 9410). I was thinking about this one as a general plinker, and maybe a backup deer gun, with slugs (since it's a cylinder bore, with rifle sights). Any thoughtsexperiencee with this firearm?
The second, is an Italian Carcano. The ammunition for this rifle, as you all know, is ridiculous, but ahand-loader'ss dream. I was curious if you could re-bore this rifle, maybe into a 7.62x39, 7mm-08, or something of that sort. Basically, if I got this rifle, and I wanted to/had the money to, what could I drill this rifle out to, or get rebarreled in?

We have the .410 Slugs around here, 5 for $4 (Abiut the same as a 12 gauge) and even though the ammunition is a little heavy for a shotgun, it looks like a fun plinker.

The Italian Carcano is not "junk". Just disrespected. As were Japanese rifles a while back. These were all over the US before JFK was shot with one. So, if it can kill a US President? It can't exactly be junk. Especially one with accuracy marks. Then came the Gun Ban craze in the late 60's. The 6.5 ammunition is plentiful enough. So, no real need to bore out. Since the chamber is in barrel. You could have a gunsmith re-barrel in most any caliber you wish. Just remember that the action is only built to handle so much pressure. So, follow your gunsmiths advice. 270 to 308W or Nato should work AOK. Re-boring a barrel is never recommended. Normally military arsenals would drill out barrel and silver solder a new sleeve in. That's not really good. But, expedient to bring older rifles to a new ammo caliber. Your biggest hurdle would be ammunition clips. Numrich sells them cheapest. http://www.gunpartscorp.com/catalog/Detail.aspx?pid=499620&catid=1574 Unless you get a great eBay or GunBroker deal. I've not had a problem with mil-surp Carcano ammo. It is also made by Hot Shot and Privi Partisan.
The next one to be considered junk will probably be the Mosin Nagant rifle. Same problem as the Carcano. Super cheap and plentiful now.
