PTSD. No combat seen, but a vet.?
Inlisted in 79 out in 82
Went in fine, came out with panic disorder and depression.
Thought i was going nuts, but only went 1 time to Dr.
Heart rate 165. ..1 Dr. said i was on drugs, (NO)
other Dr. prescribed Valium.
Have been seeing a psyciatrist since 84
Do i have a claim?
Served in 1st Inf. Div. And 1/1 cav. Border survaliace.(Germany) Serious only.
Not seen Combat.
On Disability now (panic disorder, depression.)
3rd Dr. now. Saved me from myself.
Going for 10-25% disability.
ptsd is common amongst most people especially when something traumatic (sudden shock) occurs as from a firefight, an auto accident, anything which causs a sudden reaction to stimuli regardless of source. if you have military medical treatment for any health condition, includimg ptsd, bipolar, depression, athlete's foot, that you still have, you have a claim. however, having a claim does not necessarily qualify you for compensation. most times it does, but the guidlines for the benefit have to be followed.
if i were you, i would file the claim, but use the dav or another organization to act on your behalf and let them represent you before any review board. they will follow up with whatever you have to do, but the gathering of medical records for your claim will require you to sign the forms needed. the va will get all military records, but you may have to sign the forms needed for private sector records to be sent to the va and/or your representative. you don't need a lawyer, because the organization who represents you will have one whenever one is needed, including any appeals to the veteran's court of appeals at no cost to you.
when you request records, you would be better served sending them to your representative for your claim. i recommend the dav since i am disabled and they handled everything for me. they let me know the progress and whether additional information was needed.
