Is the balance of power in the world, the essentially unequal distribution of wealth and clout that has shaped civilization for centuries, a matter of survival of the fittest… or merely of the luckiest? In Guns, Germs, and Steel, UCLA professor (and author of the best-seller bearing the same title) Jared Diamond makes a compelling case for the latter... |
Which AK should I get?
I'm looking for a relatively good quality AK.
Because I know you guys all to well, here are things I won't bend on:
I want a 7.62x39.
I want an AK, NOT an AR.
I know this will only be accurate to about 200 yards.
I know that AR's are more accurate.
Etc, . . .
Anyway, what are some good AkKs to look at? I prefer AK-74 profile over AK-47. I like the muzzle break on the 74, and the stamped steel folding stock. I would really like to get an Arsenal AK, but they are up in the $850-$1000 range. What about Saiga? They are about half to three quarters of that. Oh the bare bones wood stocked AK's, which are the best? Bulgarian, Romanian? Etc, . . .? What about Mack-90's I would prefer something in the $500-$700 range, but I will go up to Arsenal pricing if it isn't just hype. And how hard is it to add a AKS-74 style folding stock to a different AK? Thanks!
I'm looking at the SLG-20. Any personal experience?
No personal experience on the SLG. Sorry.
Usually you get the AK-74 profile on the 74 because they are "improved" AKs. The original 47 hardware is more fitted to the 7.62 round than the higher velocity 5.45mm round. Well, actually, it isn't fitted, its just to keep dust from kicking up when you're prone and to "counter" (sort of) the recoil before they started to get fancy with muzzle brakes/flash hiders. The 74 break is made to help control the recoil and flash for the 74, which is similar to a short AR in effect. The original had two wide rectangle openings on the sides and three small holes on the top to channel the flash and contain recoil. It works some on an AK-47, but it ruins the bayonet fit on most.
The folding stocks I have seen are basically the same ones on the 47s. You have an under-folder and a side folder. The 74s can be fitted with either butt-stock, just like the 47, if you change the way they fit to the receiver. Usually this just means taking one piece out and putting another in, but I recall most were riveted in, so... Everything on the two (47 and 74) seem to be identical EXCEPT for caliber issues. So, you could take a butt-stock from a 47 and put it on a 74, or vice versa, but it will bust resale values and all. This also seemed to apply to crossing borders, so you could take a Romanian stock and put it on a Russian AK. This was nice for those who liked the forward "pistol grip" on their AKs, like what the US puts on the M4 carbine. Of course, this was pre-2004 stuff for me. I assume it hasn't changed, but with the ATF, who knows.
I would take the Bulgarian over most others. But, I have a fondness for the Romanian AKs for personal reasons. Most say the Bulgarians build a better weapon, but I've never had a problem out of ANY Romanian weapon I have owned (or even used). I do detest the Chinese versions of the AK, but only because I had experience with very poor (junk) imports back in the 1980s, when they are about $100 each. However, later versions (1984 or so) have very high marks on resale, so I may be wrong. At that time, I was a 100% M16 man and it took some work to open my eyes to foreign makes of weapons.
All in all, I haven't had much problem with any AK. The biggest issues are keeping them legal with the ATF and your hometown laws. You cannot take (legally) a post ban weapon and add a pre or post post ban stock, I don't think. This pisses Uncle Sam off to no end. Same with flash hiders and other "lethal" improvements to your weapons. In some areas, mounting a bayonet is illegal (though I don't recall any recent use of the bayonet in war or peace. So are high capacity mags and other things, like laser sights and all the new "junk." Seems like most of these idiots forget it is the bullet, not the gun, that kills people, and then not even what it looks like really matters.
Way back, we used to modify our pet weapons all the time. If you like an AK, find one you can afford and then work on it. They're not that hard to play with (so long as you don't get into new barrels and fire control) and you can often find things to "make it personal." Aftermarket stocks are just one of the many offerings out there, like at Tapco, for the gun-lover. Military weapons need to be simple things, since life isn't. Thus, a little time applied can pay off big time in your hobby.
