Date stamps may help, but unless you have other clues like unit armoury marks you will have serious difficulties, tracing a weapon's provenance. You may have date stamps on barrels and manufacturers' marks (e.g. Inglis or Enfield).

It is a tough one for a weapon that was mass produced and so widely distributed. Can the people that sold it or did the deactivation help? Ryton Arms do a lot of deactivation of Brens so they may be able to help.

I have shot one though as a CCF cadet, when our school were equipped with Bren LMGs and No4 Rifles (shows how old I am) and no I was not in the film 'If'. I have also fired the 7.62 mm conversion LMG in my younger years as a servicemen.

A very accurate weapon, a bit too accurate frankly, hence we went to the GPMG. One could achieve amazing accuracy with bursts of three. Gas stoppages, where the regulator needed shifting with a combination tool, were always interesting. Ah the nostalgia of burned hand flesh on hot barrels.
