What is a good comprehensive book about WWII?
I am a history student and would prefer scholarly work instead of very basic book or works of fiction. I also would prefer the book told from the American viewpoint, covering mostly american involvement in the war, although I am also willing to read a book covering all sides and nations. I have read a handful of books by Stephen Ambrose, notably Band of Brothers and D-Day. Those are fairly decent books, although I would prefer something a bit more scholarly and more indepth. If you know anything about this field of scholarship or WWII, please suggest some books. Thank you!
The best I've found (for factual) is History of the Second World War 1966 Purnell & Sons Ltd. It describes every aspect and campaign in detail. I'd say it is by far the best.
And one of the first on D-Day is still a good one...D Day David Howarth McGraw-Hill.
Personally, every "scholarly" study I've read is flawed, for me the best were those available right after the war documents became public, and I don't have those titles now.
Though its certainly not an American point of view, you might consider reading the Memoirs of Churchill on WWII. The truth is they are absolutely essential if you want to understand fully the development of the conflict. (there are plenty of letters by Roosevelt).
If you're interested in what soldiers went through, there is a very good Pacific battlefield book called 76 Hours, Invasion of Tarawa by Hammel and Lane, and if you're interested I have a title somewhere of the personal experiences of a german soldier on the Russian front.
