What's rougher: Rugby or Football?
I know exactly what you are thinking. Rugby because they don't use pads. But when you think about it the only required pads used in the NFL are shoulder pads because there are people like Ray Lewis who hit HARD. And if he didn't have shoulder pads he could easily break someones rib and puncture their lounge or some other organ everytime he times a hit right. There is also the helmet which is used as a weapon more then a casing for your head.
Also in Rugby, when people get tackled they can break their fall with their arm. In football, if you try to break your fall your going to drop the ball (Adrian Peterson's problem) I've seen way more big hits in football then I have rugby. All I've seen in Rugby is someone getting shoved to the ground or picked up and body slammed (which I admit would hurt like hell)
I think they are both equally as rough. What do you think?
Dale -- this question has been asked literally hundreds of times on both the rugby and the American football forums. The question is unanswerable because, for some reason, many people are unable to grasp that the contact in the sport has two fundamentally different purposes.
In American football your intention is to stop the ball carrier -- cold. Like two trucks colliding head on. The defender can totally commit to the hit as he doesn't need to worry about what happens afterwards as the ball is dead. He does worry about field position because you want to prevent that ten yard gain over four downs. 9.99 yards is OK -- but not ten.
In rugby the purpose is to turn the ball over after the downed player releases it -- the general rule is that once a rugby player is off his feet, he isn't allowed to play the ball. Following the same principle, the tackler tries to stay on his feet in order to be in a better position to poach the ball from the ball carrier -- if the tackler can can stay upright and position himself correctly, he can just grab the ball and immediately counter-attack. If that means you give up an extra couple of yards to get a better body position or flip the runner -- so what? You've turned the ball over. So the hits tend to be less violent -- more wrestling than collision.
On the other hand, a gridiron squad will make a total of about 30 tackles during a game. A rugby side will easily make over a hundred. Admittedly, the individual hits come harder in football, simply because that is the nature of the downs-for-distance system. But rugby players must make (and take) at least three times as many. And all of this comes along with the general fatigue cause by the continuous play on either side of the ball, and a grand total of SEVEN substitutions during the entire match. And they aren't even rolling substitutions!
So who is rougher? I don't know, and neither does anyone else.
Arch0049 -- Rugby players don't offload to avoid hits -- they time the offload so they still take the hit. That way the tackler is still totally committed to a player who (now) doesn't have the ball.
It still hurts.
